Burton Harris, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.P.

In 2007 Dr. Harris retired as surgeon-in-chief, chairman of the divisions of pediatric surgery, and professor of surgery and pediatrics at Children’s Hospital and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, where he is now distinguished professor, emeritus. He previously held similar positions at Tufts University as the Orvar Swenson Professor of Pediatric Surgery,  surgeon-in-chief of the Floating Hospital in Boston, Georgetown University and the Georgetown Children’s Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Since retirement Dr Harris has served as visiting professor of pediatric surgery at the children’s hospitals of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the Albany Medical College.

Dr. Harris trained in pediatric surgery with Dr. H. William Clatworthy at the Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Harris’ career accomplishments include clinical care, teaching, research, program development, and administration.

Dr. Harris serves as associate editor of The Journal of Pediatric Surgery and as past chairman of the National Conference on Pediatric Trauma. He is the recipient of the Orvar Swenson Medal in Pediatric Surgery, has been cited as a Best Doctor in Boston, Washington, New York and America. He has served as president of several medical societies including the New England Pediatric Surgical Society, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the International Society of Aeromedical Services, and as program chair of the American Pediatric Surgical Association.

He is also a retired brigadier general in the U.S. Army Reserve and holds a masters-level certificate in golf course architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
